Summary
The Plaza Mayor of Salamanca presents complex challenges in urban planning and architectural design. This study reveals the intricate technical problems faced during its promotion, project development, and construction, particularly concerning the alignment of the plaza with existing city structures and the integration of private buildings into public space. The research translates meticulously documented historical texts into construction language, uncovering issues that were not addressed by original architects or builders. These include the design of facades filled with arcades and balconies, which became the visible face of this public square, as well as the construction of supporting galleries, half of which encroached on private properties by concealing existing buildings. The study employs a rigorous analysis of historical documentation to shed light on these unresolved technical dilemmas.
