Summary
Research on Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (19th–early 20th century) reveals that communicative comfort near sacred objects played a crucial role in maintaining safety and order within the site. The study finds that structured disciplinary instructions for brethren, along with improved physical conditions—particularly in caves—helped prevent crowding, injuries, and thefts while enhancing pilgrimage experiences. Analyzing Lavra administration preconceptions, operational comfort for coffin-guardians and cave guides, and the gap between ideals and reality, the research highlights how these measures contributed to reliability engineering, ensuring the preservation of shrines and icons. The findings also suggest that theft prevention in caves remains an area warranting further investigation.
