Summary
A significant discovery of over 1,200 petroglyphs, including tamgas (clan signs) and similar symbols, has been documented in the Southwest Zhetisu Alatau region, Kazakhstan. These engravings, spanning from the early Turkic period (8th century) to the early 20th century, represent a new layer of graphical data for the region. The study, conducted through extensive fieldwork in Kayshi and the valley of Maly Usek, identified numerous tamgas—hereditary clan symbols used on property such as livestock—and their variations, including potential non-tamga signs for further analysis. This research provides the first comprehensive overview of a dozen tamgas and symbols, highlighting the need for continued exploration of their connections to archaeological sites and rock art in the region.
