Summary
Heritage tourism at Fujian Tulou brings both economic and cultural benefits to local communities, particularly when they have greater control over tourism management. However, the imposition of 'international standard' management policies by local governments, framed within European architectural heritage discourse (AHD), often leads to dissatisfaction among residents and tourists alike. While some locals experience positive impacts from increased tourism, others feel alienated due to restrictive management practices that limit their sense of place and freedom. This study highlights the complex interplay between heritage conservation, local governance, and community perceptions, revealing a tension between authentic cultural preservation and the lived experiences of both residents and visitors.
