Summary
High-resolution seismic imaging and multibeam bathymetry reveal the infill history of a submerged Quaternary fjord system off the Auckland Islands, New Zealand. The study identifies sediment-filled valleys extending offshore to depths below glacial low-stand sea level, shaped by submarine fluvial erosion and subsequently filled by lacustrine, fjord, and fluvial sediments. This discovery sheds light on the complex erosive and depositional processes in remote subantarctic environments, where surface erosion and sediment overprinting often obscure geological history.
