Summary

A study of the Kasbah of Algiers reveals that colonial interventions during French occupation led to the emergence of two distinct types of housing: rental shared houses, which replicated Ottoman typology, and apartment buildings, which introduced significant modifications while retaining a central spatial organization. This research, based on an analysis of 180 houses in the historic core, demonstrates how the interaction between Ottoman and colonial architectures resulted in hybrid forms that blended traditional and colonial elements. The findings highlight the evolutionary process of housing typologies, marked by changes in spatial organization, construction techniques, materials, and ornamentation.
