Summary
Joseon-period byeolseo gardens, private pavilions embodying Neo-Confucian ideals of seclusion and literary cultivation, demonstrate strong potential for UNESCO World Heritage inscription as a serial property. A comparative analysis of three designated Scenic Sites—Soswaewon, Yun Seon-do's Garden, and Baegundong Garden—revealed shared core characteristics rooted in topography-responsive design principles while highlighting distinctive spatial strategies. These attributes collectively meet multiple dimensions of authenticity and integrity, with Criterion (iii) for exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition being most directly applicable. The study proposes a strategic framework for nomination, emphasizing the need to broaden component parts, enhance documentation-based verification, and develop integrated management models in collaboration with local communities.
