Summary

A novel approach to sustainable water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) management has been developed, offering scalable solutions for Xochimilco's canals. The research successfully designed and implemented a biorrefinery system capable of processing 500–1,000 kg/week locally or scaling up to 5–50+ tons/week regionally, converting the invasive plant into compost, vermicompost, absorbent materials, and biogas. This strategy significantly mitigates ecological disruptions while addressing tourism, fishing, and energy generation challenges. The biorrefinery model, tested from November 2019 to July 2022, serves as a replicable template for adjacent regions, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating circular economy principles in UNESCO-listed sites.
