Summary

A detailed analysis of the tomb murals in Anak No. 3, a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Complex of Koguryo Tombs, reveals distinct gender and social class distinctions through hair shapes and accessories. The study identifies a male-dominated depiction (143 males vs. 18 females) with 29 upper-class and 136 lower-class figures, suggesting the tomb's high-status ownership. Men's hairstyles—including silk hats, triangular crowns, helmets, and black hats—show greater diversity than women's, correlating with social status. Only one female hairstyle (high-rise) was documented, with variations in decorations reflecting hierarchical differences. This research offers new insights into ancient Goguryeo aesthetics and social stratification, while acknowledging interpretative ambiguities.
