Summary
A study of medieval bookbindings from four Slovak collections reveals distinct regional and workshop influences. The research identifies Vienna, Tegernsee, and Košice as key production centers, with the Dominican monastery in Košice operating its own workshop characterized by specific stamps like 'Maria.' Additionally, two clusters of Spiš region bindings—one featuring bouquet compositions and another with eagle stamps—highlight local craftsmanship beyond the known Levoča workshop. The analysis, based on 25 manuscripts from Kremnica, five from Bratislava’s Franciscan monastery, and others from Batthyaneum Library and Košice, employs blind-tooled decoration techniques to trace origins and stylistic evolution.
