Summary
A modified Location-Weighted Landscape Index (SLWLI) demonstrates high nutrient retention efficiency in the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces World Heritage Site, with sink landscapes accounting for 64% of the area and effectively retaining 72–86% of total nitrogen (TN) and 72–82% of total phosphorus (TP). Rice terraced fields, acting as composite source-sink landscapes, contribute significantly to nutrient regulation, reducing eutrophication risks. The vertical structure of the terraces further enhances their nutrient retention function. This study introduces SLWLI as a robust tool for assessing water quality in agricultural wetlands and identifying key areas for pollution control.
