Instead of providing a robust justification for rejection, ICOMOS's assessment was criticized for its abstract, unhistorical application of key criteria and its failure to align with modern, globally inclusive standards for World Heritage recognition. The review outlines potential pathways for a more contemporary and contextually appropriate approach to preserving cultural heritage in an era of globalization.
