Summary

Diplomatic correspondence between the Kingdom of Kongo and Portugal (1780–1830) reveals strategic manipulation of written communication by Kongo's ruling elite as a tool for asserting power and negotiating complex relationships with Portuguese authorities. Analyzing archival documents from Angola and Portugal, this study highlights how three Mani Kongos (Kongo kings) used diplomacy to challenge colonial governance, offering new insights into African political sovereignty during the early 19th century.
