Summary
A significant development in legal culture among Warsaw burghers during the late medieval and early modern periods (15th to mid-16th century) is highlighted, marked by a systematic spread of legal knowledge and increased reliance on written documents as evidence. The study reveals that while Chełm Law formed the municipal system's foundation, it coexisted with other legal systems, including land law, and was supplemented by royal privileges and council decisions. Analysis of court registers (1427–1535) shows a growing prominence of the high court in Toruń and the monarch's court post-1526, alongside evolving legal terminology among scribes.
