Summary

Abu Mina, a significant late antique pilgrimage center in Egypt's Libyan Desert, emerged around the martyrdom site of St. Menas during the early 4th century under Roman Emperor Diocletian. This site, distinct from a monastery, comprises large churches, bath buildings, and rest houses for pilgrims, encircled by private villas, forming an ecclesiastical complex. Excavations, which had been paused for years, resumed in April 2013 after permission was granted, allowing researchers to study this unique historical and architectural ensemble.
