Summary

A detailed geological and petrological study of Young Shiveluch Volcano, Kamchatka, reveals that its lavas—primarily magnesian andesites and basaltic andesites—originate from a hybrid genesis process. These rocks are formed by mixing silicic derivatives with highly magnesian magma in a shallow-depth magmatic chamber, periodically replenished during fractional crystallization of plagioclase and hornblende. This process explains the volcano's rock series without requiring a subducting Pacific slab melting model, offering new insights into volcanic petrogenesis in Kamchatka.
