Summary
Research identifies the red edge position index and related vegetation indices as the most effective for estimating chlorophyll content in oyamel (Abies religiosa L.) leaves within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. These indices demonstrated strong correlations (r = 0.531 to r = 0.472) with chlorophyll levels, surpassing other metrics like nitrogen content. The study analyzed hyperspectral reflectance data from 140 trees in Sierra Chincua sanctuary, Mexico, revealing that environmental factors such as altitude and slope significantly influenced leaf composition, while vegetation indices were more affected by site orientation. This finding offers a non-invasive method for monitoring plant health in this critical ecosystem.
