Summary
A unique demographic model emerges for Mesoamerica's Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, where the absence of violent Hispanic conquest and encomendero exploitation during the Colonial period offers a rare opportunity to test alternative theories of population decline. This study provides critical data on the Kekchi, Pokom, and Choloid Maya communities, derived from newly discovered but mostly unpublished documents in the Archivo General de Indias, Seville, Spain. By analyzing these archival records, researchers can now construct and validate models that challenge conventional narratives of colonial impact, offering fresh insights into the region's demographic history.
