Summary

Historical aerial photographs, when analyzed using dense image matching algorithms, can reveal significant urban transformations over time. This study demonstrates that by comparing 3D models derived from time-series aerial images, researchers can identify new buildings or demolitions with notable accuracy. The approach leverages photogrammetry to overcome challenges posed by historical imagery, such as varying quality and acquisition geometry, and provides a robust method for studying urban development. Applied to Verona's city center, the analysis highlighted patterns of expansion and changes in urban areas, offering valuable insights into the evolution of historic cities.
