Fractal analysis of tropical karst relief – South China Karst case study

World Heritage Site: South China Karst

Publication Year: 2019

Publication Type: Article

Publication Identifier: WHE5451CB59CF

Summary

Fractal analysis reveals that numerical characteristics, particularly the cover factor parameter, can effectively distinguish and classify tropical karst landscapes. The study analyzed 17 areas within South China Karst's Guilin and Huanjiang regions, identifying distinct patterns in fenglin (tower karst) and fengcong (cone karst) reliefs. These findings provide a quantitative tool for recognizing and typifying the diverse geomorphological forms resulting from long-term karst erosion under humid tropical conditions. The research highlights the potential of fractal dimensions to complement traditional classification methods, offering new insights into the complex structure of these spectacular landscapes.
