Summary

A new multilevel approach for managing the structural integrity of bridges, based on risk and attention class evaluations, has been successfully applied to the Municipality of Rome's bridge management system. This method addresses the inherent fragility of Italy's aging bridge infrastructure, much of which predates 1982 and lacks adequate maintenance due to resource constraints. The study introduces a benchmarking process between road operators and conducts a gap analysis to assess the adoption of updated Bridge Guidelines. By implementing this systematic framework, local authorities can prioritize interventions more effectively, ensuring safer infrastructure while navigating limited personnel and financial resources.
