Summary

A non-destructive, battery-operated electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique successfully predicted the corrosion behavior of two metallic cultural heritage assets: an iron bar chain from Amiens Cathedral and a weathering steel sculpture in Ferrara. The study demonstrated that in-situ EIS measurements can rapidly assess corrosion states, revealing protective rust layer effectiveness and potential danger conditions without surface damage. This portable method offers a practical solution for monitoring and preserving historic artifacts, as shown by its ability to differentiate corrosion products based on orientation and environmental exposure.
