Summary

A strong negative correlation exists between solar radiation intensity and the water surface area of Lake Srebarna, a key feature of the Srebarna wetland system. This finding was derived from an analysis of satellite data (Sentinel 2A and 2B) combined with Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) imagery, which tracked monthly changes in the lake's water surface area over one year (2025). Solar radiation levels were calculated using a high-resolution digital elevation model (30x30 m pixels from SRTM data), providing precise spatial data for the Natura 2000 protected area. The study highlights how increased solar radiation corresponds to a reduction in Lake Srebarna's water surface, offering critical insights into the dynamics of this UNESCO-listed wetland ecosystem.
