Summary

A broader distribution of chert outcrops along Malta’s west coast has been identified, challenging the long-held assumption that local chert was low-quality. This finding sheds new light on Neolithic and Temple Period lithic technology in Malta, suggesting that multidirectional flake production and scraper retouch were adaptations to the material’s characteristics. The study combines a survey of chert sources with knapping experiments, revealing variability in macroscopic properties and offering insights into prehistoric tool-making practices, exchange networks, and connectivity in the central Mediterranean.
