Summary
Recent surveys and registrations of decorated rocks in the Côa Valley have significantly expanded the known number of Paleolithic anthropomorphs, with nearly 50 figures now identified. This marks a substantial increase from previous records restricted to two sites, challenging earlier assumptions about the rarity of human figure representations in European Paleolithic art. The study categorizes these figures chronologically and typologically, providing insights into their potential cultural continuity beyond the Upper Paleolithic phase. Methodologically, the research relies on systematic survey, review, and registration efforts, which have also introduced uncertainties regarding the classification of some figures.
