Mapping of Shear Zones in the Western Ghats, Southwestern Part of Dharwar Craton

World Heritage Site: Western Ghats

Publication Year: 2012

Publication Type: Article

Publication Identifier: WHE577FF850E8

Summary

A new map of structural architecture in the Western Ghats reveals significant shear zones at the craton-mobile belt interface, particularly around the Coorg granulite massif. These shear zones are linked to the Moyar-Bhavani Shear Zone in Southern India and exhibit distinct differences in nature, geometry, and kinematics between the granulitic crust and the cratonic part. The study utilized modern mapping techniques to compile this detailed map, providing critical insights into the tectonic evolution of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
