Summary
Entrepreneurial heritage activities, driven by private individuals or civic groups without state sponsorship, play a significant role in the socio-economic development of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These spontaneous initiatives contribute to income generation, neighborhood revitalization, and identity articulation while often resisting state planning agencies. The Office of the City Historian of Havana (OHCH) encourages such entrepreneurialism, provided it aligns with egalitarian and aesthetic standards set by both OHCH and UNESCO. This study highlights how UNESCO's shift from architectural conservation to broader urban heritage management influences community-level entrepreneurship in historic cities.
