Summary
Scientists have identified Paenibacillus strain Y4.12MC10, initially misclassified as Geobacillus sp., as a novel strain of Paenibacillus lautus from Yellowstone National Park's Obsidian Hot Spring. The genome sequence reveals a single circular chromosome with 7,121,665 base pairs and a G+C content of 51.2%, distinct from other Paenibacillus species due to the absence of nitrogen fixation, antibiotic production, or social interaction genes. Notably, its high genomic synteny with Paenibacillus sp. HGF5 suggests an intestinal rather than environmental origin, challenging assumptions about its habitat. The study utilized 16S rRNA sequencing and whole-genome analysis by the DOE Joint Genome Institute to characterize this unique microorganism.
