Summary
A study of algal diversity in Kaziranga National Park and Majuli River Island, Assam, revealed distinct algal communities in these two hot spots. While 70 algal taxa from 32 genera were recorded across both sites, only two species—Phormidium chalybeum and Ankistrodesmus falcatus—were common, indicating strong location-specific distribution patterns. Majuli exhibited higher algal diversity (50 taxa) compared to Kaziranga (22 taxa), with notable differences in the abundance of Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae. The research highlights the unique ecological characteristics of these UNESCO-recognized sites, emphasizing their importance for biodiversity conservation.
