Water quality and antibiotic resistance at beaches of the Galápagos Islands

Summary

A study on the Galápagos Islands revealed that sewage discharge significantly increases Enterococcus concentrations and antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli levels at beaches, often exceeding international recreational water quality guidelines. This suggests human activities are contributing to the environmental resistome, a finding with potential global implications where tourists frequently use antibiotics. The research compared five beaches on Isla San Cristóbal, some affected by sewage discharge, using IDEXX Enterolert® for Enterococcus quantification and membrane filtration for antibiotic resistance testing in E. coli isolates.
