Summary

Underwater volcanic explosions pose significant tsunami risks, as demonstrated by numerical simulations of tsunamis generated at Karymskoye Lake (Kamchatka) and Kolumbo volcano (Aegean Sea). The study validated its model using the well-documented 1996 Karymskoye Lake tsunami, showing realistic reproduction of onshore run-ups. Further analysis revealed that even low-energy explosions at Kolumbo could threaten Santorini's northern, eastern, and southern coasts if the volcano reawakens. The research highlights the need for comprehensive tsunami hazard assessments, particularly in coastal regions with volcanic activity.
