Summary
Researchers have identified a new, micro-endemic bryophyte association, the Gymnomitrio corallioidis-Barbilophozietum sudeticae, uniquely found on the summit of Puy de Dôme in the Chaîne des Puys. This permanent, pioneer community thrives on pulverulent domite outcrops amidst cryophilic heathlands and is characterized by species such as Gymnomitrion corallioides and Barbilophozia sudetica. The association, likely once more widespread, exhibits high sensitivity to climate change, raising concerns about its long-term survival on this relatively low-altitude summit. The study highlights the ecological significance of this specialized community within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
