Summary
Recent reinvestigation of loess-paleosol sequences (LPSs) in the Krems region, Lower Austria, has uncovered complex stratigraphic records spanning the Middle to Late Pleistocene (Brunhes). These sequences, characterized by discontinuities and polygenetic units, provide critical insights into the Quaternary geological history of the Wachau Cultural Landscape. The study revisits type localities such as Paudorf, Göttweig-Furth, and Krems-Schießstätte, which were pivotal in Quaternary research until the 1970s. The findings highlight the region's significance for understanding paleoenvironmental changes and human occupation during this period, including notable Upper Paleolithic artifacts like the Venus of Willendorf and Wachtberg infant burials.
