0233 History of the Medieval Furnishings of the Franciscan Church in Toruń during the Reformation Period

A study of the Franciscan Church in Toruń reveals that its medieval furnishings were largely preserved during the Reformation, challenging assumptions about iconoclasm. Unlike typical Protestant conversions, the church's Catholic elements—such as mural paintings, tomb slabs, and altars—were retained, repurposed, or modernized rather than destroyed. The research analyzes how these furnishings functioned in the Lutheran congregation's lay area, demonstrating a pragmatic approach to religious transition. Key findings include the preservation of the high altar, rood screen, and late medieval sculptures, with adaptations like inserts for new liturgical needs. This study provides insight into the continuity of medieval architectural heritage during periods of religious change.
