Summary
A new study reveals the presence of classicism style in the mural paintings of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra churches, specifically in the side-altar of St. Apostle John the Theologian and the interior of the Church of Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, dating back to the 19th century. This discovery is based on a comprehensive analysis of historical records, archival descriptions, photos, and cartograms. The research identifies key stylistic features such as strict symmetry, calm rhythm, ordered structure, and emotional restraint, along with the use of elements like caissons, Corinthian order, rust, grisaille technique, illusory gilt frames, and monochrome ornaments. Additionally, the study proposes a working hypothesis attributing these murals to the artist Kornilii Voloshynov during 1837–1838, noting borrowings from the baroque decoration of the Dormition Cathedral.
