Summary
A submerged môle and an outer port with a perré, previously undetected, have been revealed through underwater excavations at Leptis Magna, challenging the assumption that the site's maritime structures were poorly protected. The discovery, led by Professor André Laronde, also uncovered a continuous series of architectural fragments along the coast, suggesting a more extensive urbanization linked to port activity than previously recognized. Sondages near visible walls further revealed the remnants of a thermal facility adorned with tubuli, indicating sophisticated infrastructure beyond the known Byzantine and Roman structures. This research sheds new light on Leptis Magna's maritime and urban development, particularly its eastern expansion during the Severan period.
