Summary
Nature-based solutions (NBS) offer cost-effective and viable approaches to address societal challenges, including disaster risk reduction (DRR), but their success hinges on robust governance frameworks. A study analyzing cases from Nocera Inferiore (Italy), Munich (Germany), and Wolong (China) identifies critical governance enablers—polycentric governance, co-design processes, pro-NBS advocacy groups, and financial incentives—that facilitate the initiation, planning, design, and implementation of NBS. These enablers not only enhance DRR but also deliver multiple ecological and socio-economic benefits. The findings underscore how NBS can contribute to global agendas such as climate change adaptation and sustainable development, provided that governance structures support innovative stakeholder engagement and community-based financing.
