Summary

Archaeological excavations at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pythagoreion and Heraion of Samos revealed a bronze lion's head vessel, dated to the late 7th century BCE. This unique artifact, interpreted as an external shell of a lion-headed cup, was found in a sealed deposition layer containing sanctuaries' waste, suggesting its use in ritual or ceremonial contexts. Analysis of its technical features and stylistic elements indicates local Samian craftsmanship, distinct from West Asian influences, despite some typological similarities to young-späthethitischen lion representations. The discovery provides new insights into the cultural exchanges and artistic developments in ancient Greece during this period.
