Summary

A comprehensive syntaxonomic scheme for high alpine and subnival vegetation in the Pamir-Alai and western Tian Shan Mountains (Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan) was established, identifying 15 new plant associations and three rankless communities. These were grouped into three alliances, distinguished by factors such as diurnal temperature range, annual precipitation, and seasonal climate variations. The study advanced the understanding of subnival snow-bed, grassland, and rupiculous vegetation in this UNESCO World Heritage Site region, contributing to a consistent hierarchical classification. However, it highlights the need for further research in neighboring regions like the Hindu Kush or Altai Mountains to achieve a broader, unified classification of high mountain grasslands.
