Summary

A significant shift in the urban center of Paris from the left to the right bank of the Seine during the Middle Ages, along with its long-term impact on city growth, has been revealed through advanced spatial analysis. This discovery highlights how access to water structured the surrounding urban space between the 1st and 13th centuries, providing new insights into historical urban dynamics. The study leveraged archaeological, written, and planimetric documentation, including the vectorized 'Atlas Vasserot' from ANR's 'ALPAGE' program, to map data on water supply and drainage networks such as fountains, wells, and sewers. This approach enabled a comprehensive understanding of how these elements influenced urban development across both banks of the Seine from the 12th to the 19th centuries.
