Summary

A new engineering-geological and ecological-geological map for the Karaganda region, part of the UNESCO-listed Saryarka Steppe and Lakes, has been developed to assess and typify geo-risks associated with long-term coal mining. The study identifies critical factors influencing vulnerability, including geological structures like the Karaganda synclinorium, which hosts a major coal basin. It introduces methodological criteria for monitoring hazards such as those from open-cut and underground mines, aiming to minimize their negative impacts. By analyzing coal-bearing formations, grades, and mining areas, the research provides data to certify geo-risks observed in 2020, offering a foundation for risk mitigation strategies.
