Summary
Global urbanization processes in Quito's Historic Center, particularly along Cuenca Street, reveal a dynamic tension between transnational capitalism and local Andean identities. The study demonstrates how hegemonic urban models imposed by transnational capital dismantle traditional lifestyles and practices, leading to deterritorialization—where local cultures are eroded—and reterritorialization, where new, often homogenized spaces emerge. Through genealogical analysis of Cuenca Street, the research uncovers how Quito's urban fabric is reshaped as a consumable product in the global market, prioritizing accumulation over cultural preservation. This work highlights the contested nature of Andean cities as both mestizo spaces and arenas of ideological struggle.
