Summary

A spatial modelling study identifies that approximately 35% of Rwanda's Western Province, covering areas around Nyungwe National Park (NNP) and Gishwati-Mukura National Park (GMNP), provides suitable habitat for Common Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinifurthii). The research, using Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) and Generic Algorithm for Rule-based Prediction (GARP) models, reveals that chimpanzees prefer regions characterized by high altitude, low temperature, and intense rainfall, particularly in the southern and northern parts of the study area. MaxEnt predictions proved more accurate than GARP, highlighting the critical role of precipitation and food availability in determining chimpanzee habitat suitability. The study underscores the need for targeted conservation efforts in these regions to mitigate threats from habitat loss and climate change.
