Summary

A catastrophic glacial burst from the Nanda Devi Glacier in the Garhwal Himalayas on February 7, 2021, triggered devastating floods along the Rontigad, Rishiganga, Dhauliganga, and Alakananda rivers. This Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) event, linked to rapid glacier retreat and melting due to climate change, resulted in significant loss of life, destruction of infrastructure including two hydroelectric projects worth 1.5 billion INR, and widespread damage to riverbank settlements. The study identifies climate-induced glacial dynamics as the primary driver behind this disaster, highlighting the vulnerability of Himalayan ecosystems and human populations to accelerated glacial changes.
