World Heritage Site: Vegaøyan – The Vega Archipelago

Publication Year: 2018

Publication Type: Book chapter

Summary

The World Heritage status of Vegaøyan, Norway's Vega Archipelago, differentially impacts local farming and fishing sectors, with farmers benefiting more due to favorable policies and economic incentives tied to heritage preservation, while fishermen face challenges from policy disadvantages and environmental degradation. This study reveals that the 'heritagisation' process, though beneficial for agriculture through agri-environmental schemes, has not equally sustained fisheries, raising questions about its overall contribution to cultural sustainability in the community.
