Summary
The first Geographical Indication (GI) for cachaça in Brazil, recognized as Denomination of Origin Paraty in 2024, highlights the unique historical and cultural significance of cachaça production in Paraty. This recognition follows a long-standing tradition dating back to the 17th century, where Paraty's cachaça was renowned for its superior quality and higher market price compared to other regions. The decline in production during the 20th century led to a collective effort by local producers, culminating in the formation of the Associação de Produtores e Amigos da Cachaça Artesanal de Paraty (APACAP) in 2004, which played a pivotal role in reviving and qualifying cachaça production. The study, employing exploratory and qualitative methods including bibliographic research and case analysis, underscores the importance of institutional partnerships in proving that Paraty's cachaça's unique flavor is tied to both natural and human factors. This experience serves as an inspirational model for other GIs.
