Summary
A study of the frescoes in the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin at St. Ferapontov Monastery, painted in 1502 by Dionysius's artel, reveals that ornamental circles on hanging shrouds carry ancient sacral significance and may reflect Byzantine liturgical symbolism. The research analyzes the background tonality, compositional arrangement, and number of circles, drawing iconographic parallels with Judaic ossuaries, Old Russian sarcophagi, and church decorations. This unique conceptual solution by Dionysius suggests a deeper layer of meaning in the frescoes, potentially linking visual art to liturgical practice.
