Summary

Abandoned mining sites, particularly those in mountain regions like the Romanian Carpathians, can be successfully rehabilitated into sustainable and valuable spaces through innovative, integrated approaches. This study demonstrates that ecological reconstruction and spatial-functional reintegration are feasible and beneficial, addressing significant ecological imbalances and socio-economic challenges. The research employed a comprehensive methodology, including field analysis, environmental assessments, satellite imagery processing, and geographic information operations, to propose and evaluate rehabilitation solutions. Findings underscore the critical role of innovation in achieving resilience and sustainability for mining-affected areas, offering a model for informed policy-making and fair decision-making in similar contexts.
