Summary
A novel methodology for assessing the environmental impact of wildlife roadkill has been developed and applied to the Paraty-Cunha highway (RJ-165) in Brazil, revealing significant and previously unquantified impacts on vertebrate fauna. The study identified not only hotspots with higher roadkill rates but also areas where the qualitative nature of affected species was more severe. By analyzing roadkill data at distinct stages of highway restoration, researchers demonstrated that this approach provides more precise and consistent results than traditional methods. This methodology offers a critical tool for environmental management of highways, particularly in biodiversity-rich regions like Paraty and Ilha Grande.
