Summary
Cultural tourism in the UNESCO-listed Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont (Langhe-Roero and Monferrato) is increasingly valued for its multidimensional appeal, yet local perceptions remain static. While residents prioritize landscape-linked experiences—such as food, wine, and heritage—as key attractions, their representations of cultural tourism are traditional and unchanging. The SPOT project, funded by the European Commission (2020–2022), analyzed this disconnect to assess how cultural tourism can serve as a resilience vector for disadvantaged regions post-pandemic. Using a case study approach across 15 European sites—including Piedmont—the research highlights the tension between dynamic global tourism trends and local narratives, suggesting that deeper engagement with landscape-based storytelling could enhance destination promotion.
